ARGH! I injured myself again, in the dumbest possible way and now I have to take some time off from running. Not that there’s a ‘cool’ way to injure yourself, but instead of getting to tell a bad-ass story like “I was running across a field of melty lava, trying to escape a brigade of angry zombie unicorns” (you know, just like the average hero does on a regular basis) my real story is, “My new running shoes gave me a blister on my instep, which caused me to walk funny…and I refused to stop walking/running to let in heal and instead, my new limp-walk caused me to eff up my calf/Achilles tendon.”
My stupid, self-induced injury (seriously…a blister causes this much damage?) reminds me of the episode of Friends where Chandler spreads the rumor that Ross died in a blimp accident.

Actually, I think Ross’ fake blimp accident death is way more bad-ass than my blister.
So now I have to take at least a few days off and it’s already putting me behind on training. I have no doubt that I’ll cross the finish line of my half-marathon in May. However, the chance of me running a full marathon in June is slim. Very slim. I mean, it’s 13 weeks out, so could I still train for it and finish it…probably. But I don’t want/need another crappy marathon.
I will resume training as soon as I am able to. It may only be a few days, it may be several weeks…I’m not sure. I’m attempting both standard and alternative treatments that will hopefully have me running again soon. Luckily, the marathon has a half marathon option and I can drop down to the half without penalty. I probably won’t make the final decision until I finish the half in May, but right now it looks like I will have 2 spring half marathons to kick off training for the Chicago Marathon in October.
Getting redemption in Chicago is so important to me and I’m willing to do whatever it takes to get there, even if it means taking it easy for a bit. I’m still crushed about how things went last year and I’m determined to cross the finish line proud of my accomplishment.
So, for now, I need to ignore my Fitbit and rest up. I LOVE my Fitbit and find it beneficial…but it’s also messed me up a bit and I’m convinced that I will gain 500 pounds if I don’t get at least 10k steps every day (which, I’ve actually been kind of slacking on lately anyway because of other things going on in my life right now.) I also need to really force myself to get back in the pool and weight room to help me heal and get stronger.

Tucker says “relax, man. rest iz awesome”

Baxter wants to remind everyone that a good leg stretch can help make you stronger and more flexible and possibly help prevent injuries.
Hopefully my next update will be something like ‘I just ran 10 miles and escaped the zombie unicorn brigade!’ Until then, I’m going to go snuggle with the world’s cutest kitties.
